Abolishing fares outright - simple, fast, way to better public transit

Simpler still than buying more buses and creating more reserved lanes, abolishing fares outright would be the fastest way to get millions of Canadians to leave their cars at home. If only we could stop ourselves from thinking of transit as an investment, as something where risk was a factor, as something that could be optimized to be profitable if only free market solutions were given a chance to succeed. Public transit is not, and has never been, about profit. Profit is the problem.

Free public transportation a straightforward way to cut CO2 emissions - @linknewspaper

It’s hard to imagine a more straightforward way to cut emissions while improving our lives rather than making a sacrifice. As The Link noted in its coverage of the recent transit protest, around a quarter of Canada’s emissions come from the transportation sector. Taking cars off the road means making a major dent in this area.
Electric cars may be better than conventional vehicles in the long run, but they still require resources to produce and do not come with the other benefits of public transit.
Free, expanded public transportation may be bold, but it’s these kinds of solutions that offer us the chance at a cleaner, more equal society. We should not fear investing in a better world.

Climate Activists Demand Free, Expanded Public Transit System

“Canada spends tens of billions of dollars every year, close to $100 billion on its automobiles,” Jay said, “so I think for a fraction of that we could be creating a comprehensive, highly accessible system of transportation that could meet the needs of 90 per cent of people, and do it at a much lower cost by collectivizing it.”

Policy change, not individual action, is the key - @KatieRaeP

Canada group to hold public assembly on fare-free public transit @courage_CA

Après avoir marché, qu’est-ce qui vient ensuite? (English below)

After we march, what comes next? Two of the biggest sources of climate emissions in Quebec are transportation and housing. Together, they create almost 50% of Quebec’s CO2 pollution.
A growing movement is working to make the climate transition one that benefits everyone. A “green new deal” would tax the ultra-rich and corporations and make our communities stronger with free public transportation and social housing.
On Oct 6, we’re holding a public assembly that will bring people together to talk about how to build a movement to do just that. Join us!

When calculating EROEI, don't forget clean up costs

It may take more than 2,800 years to clean up some of the decommissioned oil and gas wells currently dotting Alberta’s landscape, a senior regulatory official warned in a recent presentation made privately to the industry.

Dieppe will offer youth free public transit service for 12 months starting in July.

Residents of the city 17 years old or younger can register for a pass they can show when boarding a Codiac Transpo bus on Dieppe routes. Bus users will still have to pay if they transfer to a Moncton or Riverview route.

Dieppe council approved the pilot project Monday evening. It will begin July 2.
